Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology (Band 5/6).

📍 Location: Belfast
🕒 Hours: 37.5 hours per week, with participation in a 24-hour laboratory service covering extended days, overnight, weekends and public holidays

An opportunity has arisen for a skilled and motivated Biomedical Scientist to join a dynamic microbiology department based in Belfast. We’re recruiting at Band 5 and Band 6 level, depending on qualifications and experience, with excellent support for professional development and career progression.

🔍 Key Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory investigations appropriate to level and training
• Work independently with minimal supervision and sound judgement
• Provide supervision and guidance to trainees and support staff
• Contribute to research initiatives and development of new techniques
• Ensure compliance with health & safety, data protection and equality policies
• Participate in ongoing academic and ‘in-service’ training programs
• Uphold professional and ethical standards in all duties

🎯 Essential Criteria

Band 6 – Specialist Biomedical Scientist

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
• IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) in Microbiology
• Minimum 1 year post-registration experience in Microbiology
  OR
• 3 years as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) in Microbiology
• HCPC registration must be maintained and active
  📄 Assessed at shortlisting via application form

Band 5 – Biomedical Scientist

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
• Minimum 3 years’ experience in Microbiology
  📄 Assessed at shortlisting via application form
  ⭐ Band 5 appointees must complete IBMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology within 36 months of HCPC registration

Skills & Attributes

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong IT proficiency including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Ability to follow protocols with precision and attention to detail
• Comfortable working under pressure in a busy environment
• Awareness of laboratory function in diagnosis and treatment
• Sound understanding of Health & Safety and Data Protection
