Control & Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Cheshire

Company: We are working with a leading chemical manufacturing business, and we are currently seeking a dedicated Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join the dynamic team. As a recruitment agency working on behalf of our client, we are looking for a highly motivated individual to fill this crucial role.
Role Overview:
As the Control & Instrumentation Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in our site’s operations and development. Reporting to the Production Manager/Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for planning, documenting, and managing the maintenance of all electrical and instrumentation systems on-site. Your key focus will be to ensure all scheduled maintenance is completed on time and within budget, utilizing our site asset management system.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform reactive maintenance on production instrumentation as needed.
- Implement proactive scheduled maintenance to minimize reactive issues.
- Develop and maintain site SCADA systems in collaboration with the site IT department.
- Own site C&I standards and continuously improve them.
- Ensure compliance with BS EN 61508 & 61511, SIL systems on-site, and their maintenance.
- Manage project teams for new projects on-site.
- Negotiate and liaise with contractors and suppliers for materials and services.
- Oversee and supervise site work for maintenance projects.
- Manage projects from initiation to completion, including arranging invoices and purchase orders.
- Work with the Process/Project team to formally close off projects upon completion.
- Identify potential areas of slippage in project timelines and suggest corrective actions.
- Escalate problems to the Production Manager and assist in finding solutions.
- Ensure strict adherence to Health and Safety legislation.
- Maintain open communication with the maintenance team and Production Manager.
- Conduct health and safety inspections in collaboration with the H&S Manager.
- Adhere to all Thor Specialities (UK) Limited policies and procedures.
Competencies Required:
As a Control & Instrumentation Engineer, you should possess the following skills and attributes:
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
- Logical thinking and creative problem-solving abilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Understanding of budget control.
- Ability to work effectively within a team and lead when necessary.
- Proficiency in computer and PLC systems.
- Knowledge of risk assessments and method statements.
- Strong understanding and implementation of functional safety.
Education & Training:
- Degree qualification or working towards relevant City & Guilds certification.
- Acceptable references within the engineering discipline or substantial experience.
- Knowledge or suitable training in IEC 61508/61511, DSEAR, COMPEX, Siemens S7, software development (Iconics SCADA), UK Legislation (particularly CDM, HSWA), and health & safety awareness.
Working Hours & Environment:
- Typical working hours: 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required during project deadlines.
- Office-based with occasional meetings and visits to contractors/suppliers.
- Some projects may involve travel and time away from home.
