About the Post:

CITB NI are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a full-time Heritage Project Assistant to join their team on a fixed-term basis to assist in delivering the Future for Thatch heritage project. The project will provide training opportunities for four young people in thatching, and will engage with primary schools and community groups to explore their local vernacular heritage and stories of those who lived under thatch. The Project Assistant will report to the Heritage Project Manager, and will assist in the day to day delivery of the project.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities

  1. Project administration including (but not limited to):
  • event administration
  • responding to project queries
  • arranging meetings
  • procurement of products/services
  • correspondence with project participants.
  1. Event planning & delivery
  2. Social media support, including drafting and scheduling social media posts, creating video content.
  3. Developing and supporting the delivery of workshops & trips for project participants.
  4. Researching & developing an exhibition and online StoryMaps.
  5. Recording historic buildings through photography and video (training provided).
  6. Assisting in project evaluation and gathering of data through (although not limited to) issue of and input of feedback forms.
  7. Actively support the health and safety arrangements and procedures to avoid or minimise the risks to health and safety of all those associated with the role.

Person Specification:

This position will involve wide public engagement and would suit someone who enjoys meeting and working with a variety of people. The ideal candidate would have a strong interest in built heritage and/or history, and be able to evidence this through, for example, previous volunteering experience, work experience or previous study. The project will be fast paced, and will require excellent time-management to meet project milestones, and the ability to multitask. The candidate will be using a number of different platforms and technologies to record and host content and project outputs, therefore strong IT skills are essential, but the role also offers opportunities for creativity and collaboration. Research will play a big role in delivery of project outputs and supporting the different groups involved in the project, therefore strong research skills are desirable. Whilst previous experience of working on heritage projects is desirable, it is not essential; therefore, the role may suit a recent graduate, or someone wishing to enter the heritage sector as part of their career development or a career change.

Essential Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
  • An evidenced interest in heritage, history and/or architecture
  • Experience of working with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues
  • Effectively manage time and prioritise workload
  • Capable of using a range of computer systems including Microsoft word (including mailmerge and general communication), excel (including workbooks, charts, formula) and outlook
  • Experience of using social media
  • Comfortable with the use of devices such as tablets & smartphones
  • Full driving licence with access to a vehicle

Desirable Competencies:

  • A degree level qualification (or equivalent) in a field related to architecture and/or heritage (e.g. Architecture, Museum & Heritage Studies, Building Surveying, Building Conservation, Planning, Construction- this list is not exhaustive and other subjects will be considered where it is evidenced that studies support knowledge in this area).
  • Experience of using social media in a work context; knowledge of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) preferred.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Previous experience of working with young people.
  • Previous experience of working on heritage projects.
  • Knowledge of StoryMaps
  • Previous experience of event planning/ delivery.
  • Experience of using online meeting platforms (e.g. MS Teams, Zoom)
