Higher Scientific Officer – CARRICKFERGUS
Pay Rate: £19.59 per hour.
Location: Carrickfergus, Seapark
Start Date: ASAP
Expected Duration: 4th October 2026 with possibility of extension
Working Hours: Monday to Friday – flexible hours working with Core hours 10.00-12.00 and 14.00-16.00.
Requirements: GCE/GCSE ‘O’ levels, grades A – C in English Language and Mathematics. In addition, applicants are required to have GCE/GCSE ‘O’ levels, grades A – C in Double Award Science or 2 Science subjects (to include Biology, Chemistry or Physics).
AND
At least 2 years’ experience in an accredited laboratory carrying out scientific procedures.
Main Duties include:
Achieving Results
- Responsible for the management of work of staff under their remit, re-prioritising work to meet changing and competing demands
- Undertaking audits to fulfil requirements of the Internal audit programme
- Contributing to the review and management of the Internal audit programme on an ongoing basis
- Chair Internal Auditors meetings
- Follow up and confirmation of actions e.g. from audits, complaints, Non conformities, Non conforming work etc
- Training & supervision of trainee auditors
- Organisation and management of the QA trials programme
- Setting up trials for AFSP QSG and internal trials as appropriate
- Attendance at the AFSP QSG meetings
- Acting as an authorised signatory for the drafting and signing of letters of instructions & Reports for Trial participants
- Liaison with trial providers e.g. troubleshooting etc
- Allocating work to team utilising the full range of resources available to achieve results.
- Staff management and monitoring performance of staff
- Project management of Quality projects and participating in Quality projects
- Designing/ delivering training to staff on Quality related topics
- Writing and the development of new procedures, design of forms etc
- Attending Quality meetings e.g. Management review, Contamination and Control Group etc as required
- Production of relevant reports for Management Review, CCPG and other management meetings, as required
- Deputising for Quality Manager at Quality meetings & FSNI management meetings, if required
- Contributing to the development and maintenance of the SharePoint Document Control system, Perito system and other Quality record systems e.g. Excel spreadsheets & electronic systems.
- Overseeing the management of the SharePoint Document control system, including troubleshooting & training of staff
- Equipment – Ensuring the maintenance & calibration of Quality equipment, and records, training of staff
- Participation in and delivery of the Induction of new recruits to FSNI e.g. Contamination talks, Quality induction, SharePoint etc, as required
- Providing information to customers/stakeholders under FOI, or Disclosure etc
- Participation in UKAS visits and liaison with UKAS as required.
- Promoting a Quality culture and ensuring all relevant standards are adhered to within the team in relation to the Quality Management System
- Undertaking Quality Assurance role within the section.
- Providing assistance with Quality Checking, if required, to support team needs.
- Taking responsibility for specific QMS activities e.g. quality rep, document owner.
- Adheres to policies and procedures required for ISO 17025 and 17020 accreditations.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures in relation to Health and Safety and Equality.
- Supports the identification and management of risks either at scenes of crime or during examination/analysis of casework
- Creating an environment where Health and Safety and Equality are promoted and responsibility taken for resolving any issues within the team e.g. health and safety rep.
- Identifying and managing risks within the team to ensure effective service delivery.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures in relation to Health and Safety and Equality.
- Supports the identification and management of risks either at scenes of crime or during examination/analysis of casework

- Providing advice, guidance and technical direction as necessary to support the goals of the team.
- Ensuring competences are maintained and developed to ensure maximum flexibility.
- Attendance at relevant training courses/events
- Contributing to the teams business planning process and the development of the team’s internal and external targets as appropriate, implementing team objectives accordingly
