We are currently recruiting for a Laboratory Scientific Officer in Greenmount Campus. The successful candidates will be required to start once the vetting paperwork, ANI clearance has been completed.

Start date: ASAP

Duration: 6 months

Rate of pay: £15.83

Hours of work: 9:00 to 17:00 (or 08:30 to 16:30), five days per week

Key Responsibilities:

Specific duties
Education Delivery Responsibilities:
Liaising with teaching staff to ensure laboratory resources are aligned with practical content of education programmes.
Sourcing and maintaining availability as well as co-ordinating the preparation of the required laboratory equipment and materials.
Instructing / supporting students completing lab-based practical sessions  and assignments.
Demonstration of safe working methods and laboratory practices to staff / students as requested.
Assisting teaching staff maintain class discipline and engagement in class.
Ensuring a safe laboratory environment for both staff and students in accordance with DAERA and regulatory requirements.
Assisting integrating the relevant support to students to ensuring that all Special Educational Needs and Disability (Northern Ireland) Order (SENDO) adjustments are fully implemented.
Technical Support to Technology Transfer Projects Responsibilities (if and when required):
Co-ordinating / conducting  assessments, measurements / observations and analysis of technology projects data as requested.
   Collation / summarising / presenting results as required.
Laboratory Maintenance Responsibilities:
    Working within health & safety guidelines for all areas of the laboratory’s work
Ensuring manufacturers recommended maintenance schedules for equipment are followed and recorded and tracking & arranging for maintenance as directed.
Completing any new risk assessments / revising existing RAs as requested for the safe operation of       laboratory equipment and laboratory operations.
General Responsibilities:
   Other duties in line with the College’s business and in line with the Sc.O. grade including contribution to the development of the laboratory resource through identification of suggestions for development of the laboratory resources to improve service delivery.

Essential Criteria applicants must have:

Applicants must possess:
1. A minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Grade C or above including English, Maths, Biology and Chemistry or Physics.
AND
2. A minimum of 1 years’ full time equivalent* practical work experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, in a relevant scientific (plant and/or animal biology) role to include one or a combination of the following:
• The provision of evidence based scientific advice;
• Conducting biological assessments or surveys;
• Assessment of scientific information against specific criteria;
• Scientific data management;
• Preparation of scientific reports;
• Providing educational or community engagement services relating to biological sciences;
• Collection of biological data or monitoring;
• Undertaking biological research.

1. A) Have an A Level or HND or equivalent or higher qualification in Biological or relevant scientific discipline;
OR
2. a minimum of 3 years’ full time equivalent* practical work experience in a paid or voluntary capacity, in a relevant scientific (plant and/or animal biology) role to include one or a combination of what is mentioned in 2. in essential experience & qualifications.

*Full time equivalent (FTE) means work on a full-time basis for a year based on working 37 hours per week. Part-time working contributes proportionally to this requirement, thus for example, someone working 18.5 hours per week counts as 0.5 FTE over one year.

The successful candidate will also require access to a form of transport in order to fulfil the responsibilities of the post. Successful candidates may be required to drive Departmental vehicles.

Proof of 5 GCSEs including English and Maths grade C or above or the equivalent and 2 A-levels

Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Excellent communication skills.
Proven ability to use own initiative.
