Are you an experienced Pharmacy Technician looking for a new challenge? We are currently recruiting for a dedicated and professional Pharmacy Technician to join the Healthcare in Prison team at Maghaberry. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a vital healthcare service while working within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment.


Role Summary

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a key role in delivering a high-quality, efficient pharmacy service within the prison healthcare setting. You will support both dispensary functions and medicines management activities, ensuring safe, effective, and compliant handling of all medications.


Key Responsibilities

Dispensary Duties

  • Support the delivery of all dispensary services under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Dispense prescriptions using the pharmacy computer system.
  • Monitor stock usage in treatment rooms and liaise with Primary Care nurses on stock control.
  • Record and maintain fridge temperatures and ensure cold chain compliance.
  • Follow departmental Safe Systems of Work and use equipment safely.
  • Keep dispensing areas clean, tidy, and compliant.
  • Process medication returns and ensure safe disposal of unsuitable items.

Medicines Management

  • Issue self-administration medications and provide counselling where required.
  • Assist nursing staff with Controlled Drugs administration and maintenance of CD registers.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels in treatment rooms and process requisitions.
  • Monitor expiry dates, manage non-stock items, and process returns.
  • Update patient records on the EMIS system regarding medication issues.
  • Re-order repeat medications to ensure continuity of supply.
  • Monitor self-administration to identify potential misuse.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and dispensary contractor.
  • Contribute to data collection to identify prescribing trends and promote cost efficiency.
  • Ensure secure storage of medicines in line with legislation and Trust policies.

Essential Criteria

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working as a Student Pharmacy Technician (or equivalent) for at least 14 hours per week.

Qualifications / Registration

Must hold BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services, or an equivalent qualification such as:

Knowledge-based qualification equivalents:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Pharmacy Services
  • SQA Level 3 Certificate in Pharmacy Services
  • NPA Level 3 Programme
  • Buttercups Level 3 Programme
  • RAF/RAMC Dispensing Certificate
  • Historical Boots/NPA courses (as listed in original criteria)

NVQ3 equivalents:

  • City & Guilds NVQ3 Pharmacy Services
  • Edexcel NVQ3 Pharmacy Services
  • SQA Level 3 Pharmacy Services
