Are you passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people? William Street Short Term Children’s Home is seeking dedicated and compassionate Residential Child Support Workers to join the team in providing high-quality care and support to young people in a safe, nurturing, and structured environment.
About the Home
William Street Short Term Children’s Home is a purpose-built residential childcare setting located in Newtownards town centre. The home provides short-term residential care for up to eight young people aged 7 to 18 years, supporting those with a history of trauma and complex emotional and behavioural needs.
The home offers a supportive and structured environment, with facilities including eight bedrooms, a therapeutic room, dining room, kitchens, sitting rooms and staff offices. Staff work collaboratively to provide person-centred support and achieve positive outcomes for young people.
The Role
As a Residential Child Support Worker, you will play a key role in supporting young people’s emotional wellbeing, development, and daily living needs.
Main duties include:
- Providing emotional and behavioural support
- Supporting daily living and independence skills
- Building positive and therapeutic relationships
- Helping young people regulate emotions and manage behaviours
- Supporting access to education, community activities and social opportunities
- Administering medication where required
- Managing and recording young people’s finances
- Working alongside multidisciplinary teams and external agencies
- Supporting young people through transitions to future placements or returning home
- Undertaking driving duties as required
Experience Within the Setting
The successful candidate may support young people who display:
- Challenging behaviour
- Verbal or physical aggression
- Self-injurious behaviours
- Absconding episodes
- Emotional distress and dysregulation
- Non-compliance with routines and boundaries
Applicants should be resilient, confident and committed to delivering trauma-informed care.
Essential Criteria
Band 5
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant childcare or care-related qualification
- NISCC Registration
Additional Requirements
- Experience working with children and young people aged 7 to 18 years in a professional setting
- Understanding of trauma-informed practice
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic IT skills
- Full UK driving licence with no restrictions
Shift Pattern
A mixture of early and late shifts will be required, including weekends:
- 07:00 – 14:30 / 16:30
- 12:00 / 14:00 – 21:30
