We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our client, based in Belfast as a full-time Scientific Officer. This is a long-term temporary opportunity.

Administrator Pay Rate: £17.43 per hour

Hours of Work: 

  • 37 Hours per week
  • Monday to Friday 9am-5pm

Job Duties:

This Post has arisen due to the need to develop and implement ongoing amendments to the UK Emissions Trading Scheme policy.
Duties to include:
  • Assisting in engagement with relevant stakeholders across DAERA/other NI Departments seeking technical/scientific input to emissions trading policy development proposals, to ensure all NICS Departments with an interest in the policy have sufficient input to the policy development process.
  • Assisting in engagement with external stakeholders, including NI Regulator, ETS participants, industry representative bodies and the environmental Non-Governmental Organisation (eNGO) sector, seeking views and input into UK ETS policy design. To include assisting with the technical assessment of decarbonisation proposals including in the NI context, and the preparation of associated briefing materials and delivery of stakeholder presentations.
  • Assisting in the drafting of high quality, reliable, accurate and timely submissions of a technical/scientific nature to Ministers, Senior Officials, AERA Committee, Departmental Board and other internal and external stakeholders as required, to support decision making with respect to Emissions Trading and wider climate policy. This material will be subject to review and clearance by line management and head of branch prior to submission.

Essential Experience & Qualifications required:

Entry level qualifications compatible with external recruitment for NICS General Service EO1/Scientific Officer
  • Competent in the use of IT, including use of MS Suite products and video-conferencing software, and Information Management Systems.
  • Effective organisational skills, be self-motivating with the ability to identify, manage and respond to changing priorities and the confidence and competence to exercise own initiative and contribute to ways to improve systems and processes.
  • Good interpersonal skills, working collaboratively, sharing information, and building professional relationships with relevant stakeholders in order to help achieve business objectives and goals.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

  • A relevant qualification, preferably in a policy/scientific related discipline.
