SO Job Duties:
Science evidence is critically important in informing our response to climate change and meeting the requirements of the Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022.
The SScO post holder will join the Climate Action Plan Sector Liaison Branch to support the development, management and governance of Northern Ireland’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP).
The post holder will analyse current policies and proposals across all sectors and identify potential opportunities for new technologies, innovations and policy development to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions.They will be required to provide sound expert advice on climate change science issues and priorities,as well as researching climate action across other jurisdictions.
Responsibilities will include providing the Branch G7 and DAERA senior managers with expert advice on climate related issues and priorities for NI’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP). Given the cross-cutting nature of the CAP the post holder will be expected to engage with all NICS departments.
Essential Criteria:
Applicants are required to have:
1) At least a 2:1 honours Degree in a scientific discipline relevant to the work of DAERA, such as agriculture science, animal health and welfare, food science, environmental science or rural affairs.
AND
2) Evidence of at least two years post-qualification* experience in the provision of advice on science-based issues** to senior managers or external stakeholders. for the purposes of environmental policy development, environmental regulation or research and evidence. The experience must have occurred in the past eight years.
The following additional clarification is provided:
*Post qualification experience can include relevant post graduate study or post doctorate experience.
**Science-based issues/projects are defined as either: research and development, or testing/analysis, or provision of advice and information on scientific matters or the dissemination or application of the results of scientific research.
EXPERIENCE
The essential experience required includes:
• Experience of researching and analysing scientific developments and communicating new findings to senior officials.
Desired Experience and Qualifications:
• Experience of working with internal and external stakeholders, building strong relationships with and influencing senior officials.
• Experience of leading, planning and managing a range of complex and high-profile areas/projects.
• Ability to analyse information to assist with the development of recommendations for improvement.
• Ability to contribute to strategic decision making within the overall programme of works.
• Experience of providing written briefing and reports to senior management and good oral communication skills, including making presentations.
