Specialist Clinical/Counselling Psychologist – Cochlear Implant and Tinnitus Service

Job Summary / Main Purpose

  1. To provide a highly specialised psychology service to patients, families, carers. Provide specialist psychological assessments, formulations and individually tailored or group treatments.
  1. Be responsible with service lead for the development, supervision and delivery of psychological care within the Trust’s Cochlear Implant and Tinnitus service.
  1. Clinically coordinate and supervise the work of junior members of clinical psychology staff working within the specialism.
  1. Offer placements and supervision to trainee clinical psychologists within the service.
  1. Develop and support the psychological knowledge and perspective of the work of other staff groups within the Trust through teaching, training, clinical supervision and consultation.
  1. Undertake a leadership role as directed by service lead and manager within the team of clinical psychology staff working within the Clinical Health Psychology Service and other health specialisms as required.
  1. Participate in the delivery of ACT /therapeutic groups within the Cochlear Implant and Tinnitus Psychology service for adjustment/coping with long term health conditions.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Direct Clinical

  1. Delivery of a highly specialist Psychology Service into Cochlear Implant and Tinnitus Service, working directly and indirectly in individual and group interventions with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team involved with patient care to promote psychological health and adjustment, quality of life, optimal treatment management and to reduce disability.
  1. To provide highly specialist psychological assessments and formulations for clients referred to the service, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.
  1. To deliver and evaluate group based interventions within the service drawing on current adjustment models. Provide supervision to co facilitators. Working across clinical health psychology specialisms where appropriate.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

Honours Degree in Psychology

Professional Doctorate qualification in Clinical Psychology or Counselling Psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society (or equivalent for those trained before 1996) OR a BPS statement of equivalence

Current HCPC registration as a Practitioner Psychologist -Clinical or Counselling

Eligible for Chartered membership of the British Psychological Society and full membership of the Division of Clinical or Counselling Psychology

Substantive experience of working as a qualified psychologist in adult mental health or adult clinical health settings.

Experience of applying assessment, formulation and treatment intervention within a diversity of complex clinical conditions across the lifespan and across client groups and care settings including mental health and particularly adults/couples.

Experience of exercising clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment.

Experience as a qualified psychologist of working collaboratively and providing liaison within a multi professional team and or with non-professional groups.

Experience of working as a qualified psychologist providing supervision and or consultation to other mental health or physical health professionals.

Personal/Other (e.g. Driving etc.)

Enthusiasm for a broad range of psychological phenomena, an interest in health and psychological wellbeing.

Able to flexibly adapt approach according to need/setting and to innovate.

Ability to contain and work with organisational stress and ability to ‘hold’ the stress of others involved in client care.

Flexibility in working hours to meet the day to day demands of this full time post in the acute hospital based services.

*Current Full driving License, valid for use in the UK and access to car on appointment

Where disability prohibits driving, this criteria will be waived if the applicant is able to organise suitable alternative arrangements.

Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities

A high level of knowledge across the lifespan of health and illness psychology, models of health behaviour/cognitions and models of adjustment, coping and psychopathology.

Knowledge and experience of the use of clinical psychometrics in treatment and outcomes measurement.

Knowledge and practice skills of at least two distinct psychological therapies relevant to working with populations with long term health conditions.

Knowledge and practice of supervision of healthcare professionals involved in the care of client groups.

Experience of teaching and training.

A high level of ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients their families, carers and other professional persons, both within and outside services.

Knowledge of legislation and its implications for clinical practice in relation to psychology within a physical health setting including safeguarding.

Ability to plan and manage own caseload, prioritise own workload and that of other junior colleagues.

Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practised within the field of applied psychology.

Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS/HCPC.

Evidence of significant additional post qualification specialist therapy training or qualifications at intermediate level e.g. CBT dip, Family Therapy, ACT , Mindfulness, EMDR.

Training in delivery of supervision.
