Waste Operations Supervisor
Location: Sullatober – Carrickfergus
Pay Rate: £20.66 per hour
Hours: 37 hours per week
Contract: Temporary (Initial 3-month assignment)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Waste Operations Supervisor to lead the day-to-day delivery of key waste management and environmental services within the Sullatober area. This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive operational leader with experience in waste services, staff supervision and service improvement.
Working within a busy operational environment, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and in compliance with all statutory requirements while maintaining high standards of customer service.
Given the nature of the role, the successful candidate may be required to work outside normal hours, including weekends, evenings and public holidays, in line with service requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Service Delivery
You will be responsible for the effective operational management and supervision of a range of services, including:
- Refuse collection
- Commercial waste collection
- Kerbside recycling collection
- Street cleansing
- Bulky waste collections
- Deliveries and logistics support
- Public conveniences and associated cleaning services
Key duties will include:
- Planning, scheduling and allocating workloads to operational teams.
- Monitoring service performance and maximising operational efficiencies.
- Ensuring high-quality service delivery within budgetary requirements.
- Implementing and maintaining statutory, legislative and governance requirements.
- Supporting the development of waste collection, recycling, disposal and fleet management services.
- Liaising closely with Transport Management to ensure vehicles and plant are serviced and maintained.
- Identifying training needs and coordinating staff training on vehicles, plant and equipment.
- Managing cash handling procedures where required.
- Preparing reports and performance information for the Operations Manager.
- Undertaking risk assessments and developing Safe Systems of Work.
- Delivering Toolbox Talks and ensuring staff understanding and compliance.
- Assisting with investigations into service complaints and implementing appropriate actions.
- Acting as an authorised officer and undertaking enforcement duties in accordance with statutory guidelines.
- Managing Service Level Agreements for chargeable services.
- Assisting with tender preparation and evaluation processes.
- Procuring Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and operational materials.
- Participating in internal and external working groups.
- Contributing to the delivery of the Council’s Waste Management Plan.
- Building effective working relationships across departments and stakeholders.
- Participating in discussions and negotiations with Trade Unions and Management.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all Council policies and procedures.
- Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture.
- Support effective risk management, governance and control assurance arrangements.
- Drive continuous improvement across operational services.
Essential Criteria
Applicants must possess:
Qualifications
- A minimum of a Degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline such as:
- Management Practice
- Environmental Services
- Or a closely related field
Experience
Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of two years’ experience (or four years’ experience if the qualification requirement above is not met) in the management of an operational service delivering successful outcomes, including:
- Supervising operations within a waste management environment.
- Successfully managing and supervising operational staff.
- Delivering measurable service improvements within a functional area.

- Full current UK driving licence.
