Is there a benefit to being left handed?.

For all you southpaws out there, let’s commemorate Left Handers Day by listing all of the benefits of left-handedness.

But first, a bit of science.

So, why are some people left-handed?

Hand preference is influenced by two manifestations of a gene at the same genetic location. The D gene and the C gene.

The D gene is more frequent in the population and it is the gene that promotes right-hand preference.

The C gene is less likely to occur within the gene pool, but when it does, means that the hand preference of the individual will be determined randomly. Individuals with the C gene will have a 50% chance of being either right-handed or left-handed.

The Benefits?

Creativity.

Lefties may only make up about 10% of the population, but studies have found that the left-handed score higher when it comes to creativity, visualization, intuition and rhythm.

Health.

As we live in a predominantly right-handed world, left-handed people have had to get used to using their no dominant hand more often than a right-handed person would be forced to use their left. Because of this, the left-handed have better strengthened both sides of their brains and as a consequence, left-handed stroke victims reportedly recover faster.

Sport.

Left-handed athletes have an advantage in competitions where opponents one another face head to head due to the fact that the left-handed have more of an opportunity to practice against the right-handed.

Wealth.

Left-handed graduates go on to become 26% richer than their right-handed brethren. Bonus fact: four of the five original Apple Macintosh designers were lefties

Noble Prize winners?

According to research in the American Journal of Psychology, lefties are better at divergent thinking and complex reasoning, which over the years has resulted in numerous lefty Nobel Prize winners.

Long gone are the days of punishment for being left-handed, so lefties, today is your day to celebrate – you may as well, chances are you’re richer, smarter and healthy than the rest of us anyway.
