How to Climb the Career Mountain

How to Climb the Career Mountain.

This #MountainDay we thought we’d give you our advice on how to climb the most formidable mountain of all – Mt. Career.

Get Yourself a Mentor

A mentor, in the form of a co-worker or a superior, can help you identify and improve the skills you need to progress within your role. They can also be on hand to help you with any challenges you may be experiencing.

Use Your Appraisals

Appraisals are a great means to keep a track of your development goals.

They let you know what it is you’re doing well and what it is that you can improve on – so utilise them!

Plan

Use those appraisals and learn from them. You can now start making a plan on how you’re going to improve and achieve the development goals you’ve set yourself – putting you firmly on the path to progression.

Know Your Industry

In order to climb that career mountain, you want to be seen as the go-to guy for information. This can be achieved by staying up-to-date with all the latest news reports and industry relevant journals. A better understanding of your own industry will also mean you’ll have a better idea of where you may want to get to within it.

Impress Your Boss

Arrive early, dress well, stay positive, hit deadlines. If you’re seen to be doing your job to the best of your ability and more, your boss will notice this and will reward you appropriately.

Network, Network, Network

Network wherever possible and take time to meet and connect with the people within your organisation. Becoming known will mean you’ll hear about new opportunities which you can then capitalise on and prove your worth – which in turn will lead to progression!
