How Can Volunteer Time Off Make a Lasting Impact: Jack’s Experience

How Can Volunteer Time Off Make a Lasting Impact: Jack’s Experience.

We are committed to supporting social impact initiatives and empowering our team to make a difference in their communities. Our Volunteer Time Off (VTO) programme allows colleagues to take a paid day off each year to volunteer with a charity or organisation of their choice. Recently, Jack Knox, Candidate Consultant in Belfast, used his VTO day to volunteer with Scripture Union Northern Ireland (SUNI). We spoke to Jack about his experience, and here’s what he shared.

Could you tell us about Scripture Union Northern Ireland and why you chose to volunteer with them?

Scripture Union Northern Ireland (SUNI) is a charity that works with multi-religion schools and communities across Northern Ireland, providing educational and developmental programmes for children and young people. I first became involved with SUNI as a young participant at one of their summer camps, where I benefited greatly from the support and guidance provided. Now, many years later, I have returned as a volunteer leader to give back to the next generation. For the past eight years, I’ve been a general leader, and for the last four, I’ve taken on the role of section leader, overseeing the youngest group at the camp.

How do you think your volunteering made a difference to the people you are helping?

During my time volunteering, I focused on creating a fun and safe environment where children could engage in various activities. These included crafts, educational videos, and interactive sessions designed to develop their social and cognitive skills. By fostering a supportive atmosphere, I believe I helped the children to learn and grow while also ensuring they enjoyed themselves.

What did you find most rewarding about volunteering with SUNI?

The most rewarding aspect of volunteering with SUNI is seeing the children return year after year because they enjoy the experience and want to learn more. Watching their excitement and enthusiasm as they participate in activities that we spend months preparing is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a reminder that our efforts have a lasting impact on their lives.

Why do you believe initiatives like our VTO scheme are important for both employees and the community?

Initiatives like the VTO scheme are vital because they encourage us to actively engage with and contribute to our communities. Being involved in community work helps us build stronger connections with the people around us and make a positive impact in our local areas. The VTO scheme is particularly beneficial as it removes the stress of balancing work commitments with volunteering, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in these meaningful activities.

What advice would you give to colleagues who are considering taking a VTO day?

My advice is simple: take the plunge and do it! There are countless organisations out there that need help, and no matter what your interests are, there’s likely a cause that aligns with them. As adults, we have the power to influence and inspire the younger generation, and volunteering is a fantastic way to make a lasting difference in your community. By taking a VTO day, you’re not only helping others but also setting an example for those around you.

Our VTO programme is making a real difference, and we encourage all our colleagues to get involved and support the causes they care about, aligned with our ‘Purposeful’ value. Together, we’re creating a stronger, more connected community.
