Assistant Solicitor

Belfast

£19.32 per hour

MAIN PURPOSE

The Solicitor will undertake and assist in the provision of professional and timely legal advice and assistance in relation to a range of matters across the main functions of the team, with a focus on social housing, the conduct of High Court civil litigation, including judicial review and tribunal work, and conduct of contentious work, as directed, which may include homelessness legislation, employment, FOI/Data Protection, civil litigation.

The Assistant Solicitor will be expected to work independently, under the supervision of the Senior Solicitors within Legal Services to ensure the provision of a high-quality legal services to all levels of the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

  1. The Assistant Solicitor will undertake and assist in the provision of professional and timely legal advice and assistance and representation in relation to a range of matters across the main functions of the team as follows, for which training will be provided:
  • social housing and the conduct of High Court civil litigation, including judicial review and tribunal work
  • conduct of contentious work, as directed, which may include homelessness legislation, employment, FOI/Data Protection, civil litigation
  1. To undertake and assist in all aspects of the provision of legal advice and assistance to the Housing Executive in the delivery of its statutory functions and business objectives.
  1. To assist in the provision of legal advice and assistance in respect of the development and operation of Housing Executive policy matters.
  1. To undertake and assist in the quality assurance of settlement of public liability claims.
  1. To undertake research into legal issues and provide opinion papers as directed.
  1. To liaise with, attend and advise clients and third parties and accept new instructions as directed.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

Applicants must provide evidence by the closing date for application that they meet the following essential criteria:

  1. Possess a degree or equivalent (Level 6*) qualification.

  1. Be a solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland qualified to practice in Northern Ireland.
  1. Can demonstrate at least 24 months relevant post-qualification experience in the provision, or assisting in the provision, of legal advice and assistance in relation to the conduct of, or assisting in the conduct of, claims litigation matters in the High Court or County Court.
  1. Can demonstrate (to be assessed at assessment / interview):
  • Excellent analytical thinking and decision making skills
  • Strong organisational skills in order to manage a busy caseload
  • Ability to work well under pressure of multiple deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills
  • Willingness and ability to work collegiately
  1. Possess a current driving licence or have access to a form of transport that enables them to meet the requirements of the post in full.
