Job Title: Refuse Collector

Department: Environmental Services

Hours: 37 hours per week, Tuesday to Friday, 7:30 am – 5:15 pm

Salary: Scale 3

Main Purpose:

The Refuse Collector is responsible for providing general manual support to Technical Services to ensure the efficient removal of refuse from household, industrial, and commercial premises. This role involves working within a cleansing area, utilizing various refuse collection containers, vehicles, and equipment for appropriate disposal.

Summary of Responsibilities and Personal Duties:

  1. Work as a team member to follow the refuse collection schedule and act as a Team Leader, overseeing the refuse loader team, delegating tasks efficiently for an effective refuse collection service.

  2. Start and finish work at agreed times and locations in all weather conditions, collecting waste from private and commercial premises, ensuring compliance with recycling policies and proper placement of stickers where necessary.

  3. Handle refuse collection with care, ensuring minimal disturbance to the public. Bins should be emptied, lids closed, spillages cleaned, and gates closed. Responsible for safekeeping and maintenance of equipment.

  4. Report overlooked collections, dangerous occurrences, damaged bins, or other issues to line managers. Return refuse containers without causing obstructions on roads or footpaths.

  5. Maintain daily record sheets related to collection operations. Adhere to Health and Safety Legislation, wearing appropriate protective gear, ensuring safe lifting practices, and promoting a safe environment for the public and fellow staff members.

  6. Assist the Driver in safe vehicle maneuvering during the round. Address complaints promptly and report them to supervisors. Assist with snow clearance and gritting as required.

  7. Empty various receptacles and handle loose waste safely. Operate waste collection systems, including bin lifts and associated safety equipment.

  8. Participate in training activities to enhance personal and team performance. Provide on-the-job training for new staff when required.

  9. Attend team briefings, use communication facilities as needed, keep records of collections, and retain keys for property access.

  10. Handle public inquiries and complaints professionally, safeguarding the Council’s image while ensuring high levels of customer care.

  11. Undertake additional duties as required.

  • A minimum of two years’ continuous labouring experience.
