We are currently recruiting for a Policy Officer based in Belfast. The successful candidates will be required to start once the vetting paperwork, ANI clearance has been completed.

Start date: Before 28/08/2026

Duration: 6 Months with a possibility of extension

Rate of pay: £19.59

Hours of work: Monday – Friday 9 – 5  37 hours

Key Responsibilities:

The Branch is currently developing its workplan and therefore duties and responsibilities may vary, however the post-holder will be expected to support the Deputy Principal(s) and Head of Branch with activity including, but not limited to, the following, which will involve working closely with staff across the Just Transition work areas and wider CCLPD:
• Conducting research across the topic of a just transition and the application of the just transition principle in NI, in other UK jurisdictions, in Ireland and internationally.
• Initial drafting of briefings, presentations and documentation in order to assist in the development of a guiding framework around the application of the just transition principle as part of climate change and carbon reduction policy development.
• Support the Branch in conducting stakeholder engagement, liaising across teams within the Climate Change Science & Innovation Group (CCSIG), with other DAERA policy teams, NI Departments, industry, eNGOs, academia, the voluntary and community sectors and other stakeholders.
• Conduct analysis from a range of sources to assist with policy development.
• Contribute to Ministerial and general correspondence as well as monitoring and tracking progress of AQW/FOI/EIR issues.
This list is not exhaustive but provides a good indication of the main duties of the post. The emphasis on particular duties will vary over time due to the distinct stages of policy development and will be dependent on business need.

Essential Criteria applicants must have:.

Degree with a minimum of 12 months experience.

In addition to the NICS competences for the Grade, the person taking up the temporary role will, particularly, be required to demonstrate:

• Autonomy – Ability to work at pace, independently and under own initiative;
• High levels of analytical and problem-solving skills – having the ability to read and absorb scientific/technical/legal information, and summarise for senior management;
• Experience of building strong working relationships with a range stakeholders to deliver shared outcomes;
• Experience of drafting written and/or oral briefing to Senior Management and the Minister; and
The ability to adopt a pro-active and flexible approach to dealing with issues at short notice to ensure deadlines are met.

Excellent IT skills, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Excellent communication skills.
Proven ability to use own initiative.
