Part-Time Jobs: Is Interest Peaking?.
Early retirement, labour shortages and the cost of living crisis may lay the groundwork for a surge in people looking for part-time jobs. Recent Office of National Statistics data is showing a steady increase of over 50’s returning to work, a slow climb back to pre-pandemic levels.
On top of this, labour has urged the government to prevent those over 55 years old from getting early access to their private retirement fund. This is just one attempt to keep older generations in the workforce to help tackle labour market shortages.
But it’s not just 50-64-year-olds, 16-24-year-olds are also entering the workplace at an unprecedented rate to combat the cost of living crisis, in favour of part-time work.
So, why is part-time work spiking?
As more people are looking to get into work due to ongoing economic stresses, we need to ask, why is part-time work becoming the preferred option for some job seekers?
High Flexibility
One of the most popular benefits of part-time work is how flexible it can be. The Office Of National Statistics found that 36 per cent of those over 50 would only return to work if the job offered flexible working.
Flexible working allows employees to work around their busy lives and greatly reduces work-related stress. One of the key reasons older generations were attempting to retire early in the first place was stress. However, it’s not just the older generations seeking part-time jobs for flexible opportunities. An increasing number of Gen-Z students are opting for part-time work whilst studying to improve their disposable income.
Reduced Stress
As mentioned, a key reason over 50’s retire early is stress-related. Those working part-time hours may experience reduced stress, as you spend less time focusing on your job duties and less time commuting, relieving the pressures of work.
Working part-time will often mean diminished responsibility. Because you won’t be on duty as regularly as full-time staff. This is a benefit for both older and younger workers who may not be in the stage of their career to hold high responsibility for different reasons.
Cost of Living Crisis
Due to the cost of living crisis, and sky-high inflation, real-term wage has been falling for months. Meaning some workers have no financial incentive to move from part-time to full-time employment due to benefit rules making up the difference for part-time employees. As the Guardian discusses, full-time work no longer pays. If people are making more money from working less, why would they turn to full-time work?
Final Thoughts
Part-time work is seeing a peak in interest for good reason. It’s easier for those entering the workplace for the first time or those returning after a prolonged absence, whilst earning what they need. Working part-time allows some employees to take on reduced responsibility while still contributing to their workplace, all whilst maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
